Here there is a screenshot of the feedback we received from one of our surveys. We asked seven questions varying from age to what they like about short films.

The first question asked what their short film was. This person replied with the ‘last man on earth’. From this we will research the last man on earth and establish the codes and convention it has and try to portrait these features in our film.

Secondly, we asked what their favourite feature of their favourite film was. This question is a specific question so that we know exactly why they like the film. They answered with characters. From this, we know to research about the characters. The results of this may be put into our film to meet their needs.

Question three we asked what their favourite genre is. They answered with dark humour. This has positive correlation with their favourite film is that is a dark humour short film. Therefore, we can gather that this person enjoys dark humour. We could consider adding an element of dark humour as they feedback on it is positive.

Question four asked the person what short film they would make if they had the opportunity. There are many genres like documentary, humour, action, adventure etc. This person wrote mental health. Mental health could be presented in different ways. It could be documentary based on a person that had this experience or we could form a campaign for awareness with titles and messages. This information was branched our ideas into different genres which we will consider.

If we want to know our audience we need to know some information based on them. We asked the person for their age. They answered with 16-21. The reason we didn’t set one age is because films can’t be made specifically for one age, 16-21 years of age stands for the young generation of teenagers and young adults. They are perceived to have similar interests therefore they are put into one category.

Furthermore, the distribution of our film is important because if it doesn’t reach the audience then it’s pointless. Therefore, we asked our audience where they think the best distribution is. They answered with YouTube. YouTube is a large well known platform for movie trailers and can be accessed by every one of all ages. Also, you tube is a free platform for us to advertise our film to the public. In addition, you tube has a comment section which means that our film can be applauded or criticised. We can take this information into our evaluation and evaluate if it’s good or whether we should made it differently.

Here we have another survey feedback screenshot.

This person answered that their favourite short film is ‘Room 8’. Room 8 is a short film heavily focused on the storyline. It’s about a prisoner that finds a magical box with a secret that he falls foul to.

Question two they answered that they preferred the meaning of the story. This suits their favourite film.

The respondent skipped this question which could be showing that they are unsure of what genre they’re into.

This person also answered with mental health. This shows that mental health is becoming a popular topic for a short film as both respondents so far have chosen mental health. This signifies that the audience want to see a mental health based film.

Question five was skipped.

This person stated that they think that the best place to distribute the short film is a film festival. However, our low budgets for film makes this impossible to do this. Also, our short film would have to gain some recognition in order to be received in a film festival. However, if our film did well in terms of views and comments then this could be achievable.

Lastly, the last question shows that this person doesn’t regularly watch short films. They said that they only view short films a few times a year.

Initial Audience Research

This section is about finding out things about our target audience and adapt our film to their needs. This means that we can satisfy our audience for a more enjoyable experience. To find this, I did some primary research in the form of a questionnaire to find out general knowledge about our audience.

We sent out a questionnaire to use our primary research to many people to receive feedback to help us with our production. We asked our possible target audience, what their gender is. This is because male and females have different preferences which means in order to maximize our audience we should try to find an in between area for both genders to equally enjoy our film. As you can see, our recipients were 50, 50. This lets us know that the same amount of genders responded to our questionnaire.

Secondly, its important for us to know the ages of our audience. This is because we want to find out the interests of the younger generation around the teenagers years as they are our target audience age.

Furthermore, we wanted to find out what general public liked about films. This information provided us with knowledge of what people like. Therefore, we can satisfy their needs of what they like in a film by interpreting their ideas into our film. As you can see, the most popular feature is the storyline. This means that for our film t be successful we need to ensure that our storyline has significant meaning. It must show and signify something and must be easily identified to what the film is about.

We also asked our audience about what their perception of a short film is. The top answer was entertainment. Based on feedback not many people understand the definition of a short film. However, we can also see that people find short films entertaining. This keeps the audience engaged with the film. A few answers state they people think short films are experimental. This could be a good theme for our short film as this would some interesting or obscure ideas.

This question was made to find out what was the public's favourite genre is. The highest amount of votes were in favor of dark humour. However, we feel that mental health is more of a broad subject and would more interesting to do. On the other hand, some responses came back as psychological that can be related to mental health. Therefore, there is still an interest for mental health.

The question was just find out some more personal information about the public. we found that most people don't watch short films much. This means that our short film has to be meaningful to attract a better response from this audience.

Its important to find out where people watch short films. This is because we need to advertise our film appropriately to where our consumers are. The most popular vote was Youtube. Youtube is a free platform where we can post our videos to share with the world.

We have an idea of mental health but we wanted to find out what the public thought. many things like depression and anxiety are consequences of mental health. This needs to be shown in our film to make it easier for the audience to understand  our film. Mise en scene can be a good way of showing our theme and actors showing signs of mental health awareness to show awareness for the illness.

People expect mental health awareness to be part of a short film. This correlates with our idea of our short film therefore its a viable option to film about. We plan to have a story line of a real life based issue and then show awareness techniques and statistics to show the depth of the problem.

The majority of our responses said yes to watching a short film. This is big positive and shows that the idea of mental health is good and the consumers would enjoy it.
