Here there is a screenshot of the feedback we received from one of our surveys. We asked seven questions varying from age to what they like about short films.
The first question asked what their short film was. This person replied with the ‘last man on earth’. From this we will research the last man on earth and establish the codes and convention it has and try to portrait these features in our film.
Secondly, we asked what their favourite feature of their favourite film was. This question is a specific question so that we know exactly why they like the film. They answered with characters. From this, we know to research about the characters. The results of this may be put into our film to meet their needs.
Question three we asked what their favourite genre is. They answered with dark humour. This has positive correlation with their favourite film is that is a dark humour short film. Therefore, we can gather that this person enjoys dark humour. We could consider adding an element of dark humour as they feedback on it is positive.
Question four asked the person what short film they would make if they had the opportunity. There are many genres like documentary, humour, action, adventure etc. This person wrote mental health. Mental health could be presented in different ways. It could be documentary based on a person that had this experience or we could form a campaign for awareness with titles and messages. This information was branched our ideas into different genres which we will consider.
If we want to know our audience we need to know some information based on them. We asked the person for their age. They answered with 16-21. The reason we didn’t set one age is because films can’t be made specifically for one age, 16-21 years of age stands for the young generation of teenagers and young adults. They are perceived to have similar interests therefore they are put into one category.
Furthermore, the distribution of our film is important because if it doesn’t reach the audience then it’s pointless. Therefore, we asked our audience where they think the best distribution is. They answered with YouTube. YouTube is a large well known platform for movie trailers and can be accessed by every one of all ages. Also, you tube is a free platform for us to advertise our film to the public. In addition, you tube has a comment section which means that our film can be applauded or criticised. We can take this information into our evaluation and evaluate if it’s good or whether we should made it differently.
Here we have another survey feedback screenshot.
This person answered that their favourite short film is ‘Room 8’. Room 8 is a short film heavily focused on the storyline. It’s about a prisoner that finds a magical box with a secret that he falls foul to.
Question two they answered that they preferred the meaning of the story. This suits their favourite film.
The respondent skipped this question which could be showing that they are unsure of what genre they’re into.
This person also answered with mental health. This shows that mental health is becoming a popular topic for a short film as both respondents so far have chosen mental health. This signifies that the audience want to see a mental health based film.
Question five was skipped.
This person stated that they think that the best place to distribute the short film is a film festival. However, our low budgets for film makes this impossible to do this. Also, our short film would have to gain some recognition in order to be received in a film festival. However, if our film did well in terms of views and comments then this could be achievable.
Lastly, the last question shows that this person doesn’t regularly watch short films. They said that they only view short films a few times a year.

Initial Audience Research
This section is about finding out things about our target audience and adapt our film to their needs. This means that we can satisfy our audience for a more enjoyable experience. To find this, I did some primary research in the form of a questionnaire to find out general knowledge about our audience.
