In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Firstly, my media product challenges conventions of a real media product because my media product is a short film of five minutes. This comes under the time frame categorised as a short film as the limit for a short film is forty minutes.
Furthermore, my media product was produced on a low budget. This meant that the quality of the film would be slightly hindered as we weren't able to access certain technologies like high quality camera equipment. We were inclined to a short film rather than feature length is the budget wouldn't be sufficient for a feature length film that in the industry can be up 100 million pounds as their budget. However, using the budget that I had I opted for free platforms like YouTube to distribute my film and filming equipment that I had to borrow. These elements would help me penetrate the market with a lower budget.
Lastly, the general perception of short films is that most have codes and conventions of close up camera angles capture emotion and a mixture of sound elements to suit with the picture shown. This makes for a more enjoyable viewing as the audience multi task between sight and hearing to form an emotion with the characters. My film matched this perception as I chose the topic of mental health. Its not a popular short film topic and therefore I could exploit to my ability. I would describe my film as a dark, chilling storyline with props to illustrate the actions with meaning and the addition of uncomfortable sounds. There is no happy ending which goes against many stereotypes of films in general to always have a happy ending. This is a key to making sure that the film is rememberable which not only is important but the film will spread through word of mouth.
